Auckland
We spent three nights in Auckland, initially recovering from the long journey and then avoiding the pouring rain. Other challenges included learning to navigate around town and read a map. It may seem like a little thing, but when you're used to the sun presenting itself in the south, and suddenly it's skirting the northern horizon, it's more than a little disconcerting.
The Auckland Central Business District (CBD to use the local vernacular) is small enough to be traversed on foot in a few minutes, though it is a little up and down. It was here we were first introduced to such local delights as hokey-pokey ice cream and the charming expression "No Worries!"
During our time in Auckland we acquired the following impressions of the area -
- Sky Tower - a good overall orientation to the city!
- A walk around the CBD
- Auckland Museum in Domain Park
- Parnell Street shopping district
- Devonport
- Mt Eden
- Kelly Tarlton's Arctic Encounter and Underwater World
- Takaparawha
Then we traveled to Rotorua
