Celebration of Life Tour

Sibenik, Croatia

Zadar, Croatia

From Zadar, we were whisked away by bus to Sibenik, a medieval city located where the river Kirka meets the Adriatic sea. It has the distinction of being the oldest native Croat city along the Dalmatian Coast. The old city is easily walkable in a couple of hours and its narrow winding streets are quite charming, despite the ever present mini-split air-conditioning units attached to nearly every ancient stone wall.

On the return trip to the ship we stopped by a farm and restraunt called Roca, a few minutes off the main highway. We were treated to a lunch of soup, cheese, and meats cured on the premesis. Also, there was a small band, a mandolin, guitar and bass, performing traditional Croatian music in the dining room. Then the music took a curious turn - I recognized the intro immediately and watched around the room for the reaction when they reached the chorus, singing "Welcome to the Hotel California!" It was priceless!

Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon when we returned to the ship and we weren't up to trying to take on the old city of Zadar in the last hour before departure. Something for another trip. However, we did get a chance to see and hear the famous sea organ there on the waterfront. Watch the video below to hear the instrument in action..
