Celebration of Life Tour

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Koper, Slovenia

Another port with tough decisions. There were a half dozen options available, all attractive. We elected to visit Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

Ljubljana is a mouthful for American visitors. I'm pretty sure our tour guide taught us the simplified version by teaching us to say loo-BLAH-nah. My independent research suggests that perhaps lyoo-BLYAH-nah is a little more realistic. Ljubljana is first mentioned by that name in the 12th century, but a Roman city stood on this site way before that. The old city features a large castle on the hill (Ljubljanski grad) and the city below surrounded by the river. An artificial canal was dug around the hill and the Ljubljanica River was diverted to fill the mote around the city. The result is very picturesque.

We spent the better part of a day walking the town. We ate a lunch of traditional Slovenian fare, rode the funiculum to the top of the hill, purused the market and took lots of pictures.

We didn't have time to visit the old town of Koper, but I snapped a couple of shots as we left port, and took some pictures of the sunset as we proceeded toward Venice.
