Day 4 - Skagway
Disembarking from the ship in Skagway we were greeted with a rainbow. I took this as a good omen. My primary objective for the day was to retrace my journey as a nine year old aboard the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad from Skagway to Carcross. That trip 50 years ago was burned into my brain with vivid clarity. Today, I was going to find out just how accurate those childhood memories were. As we proceeded up the almost 4% grade it became obvious that I have an amazing memory! The day was fantastic. In 1966 there were no roads - only the narrow gauge tracks traversed the rugged glacier capped mountains. The 67 1/2 miles doubled to 135 bone jarring miles as there was no one-way trip opportunity. The rails were rough. Much rougher than today. But, as they say, you can't go back...
