The Missoula flood resulted from a huge lake impounded by an encroaching glacier during the last ice age. The horizontal bands on this hillside above Missoula mark lake level as the water rose. The lake eventually breached the ice dam and the nearly 3,000 square mile lake emptied in a matter of hours. | |
