Rhyolite, Goldwell

The actual, original, Stovepipe Well
The well (and there may have been more than one) was frequently covered by blowing sand, and since it was the only water for miles around, an important landmark. Someone stuck a length of stovepipe into the top of the well and a name was born. This is actually about 5 miles northeast of the current 'town' of Stovepipe Wells.
