The story of Scotty's Castle is long and involved. Wikipedia's article only gives the barest hint of the drama and intrigue associated with the history of the place. The castle didn't belong to Scotty, nor did he really live there. This elegant spanish style oasis sits near the mouth of a small canyon at the north end of Death Valley.

We made a two part visit out of the castle. We had intended to do the full tour on day 3, but we knew we wouldn't make Racetrack during daylight if we did. We opted instead to take a few pictures around the outside and head out to Racetrack before the lengthening mountain shadows left the playa in the dark.
