The Harmony Borax Works are a famous and regularly visited feature of the park. The giant wagons used to transport the processed Borax out of the valley have become, along with the teams of 20 mules required to pull the impossibly heavy load, the symbol of perseverence in the face of adversity. There's not a lot left of this late 1800s venture. The borax was removed by desolving it in water and then processing the solution in an evaporator. This rather crude product was then loaded into the wagons for export. |
